Elisa's Love Bites
Bushwick is becoming quite a vegan haven, and Elisa’s Love Bites is adding to this Brooklyn glory. Elisa’s Love Bites is 100% gluten-free and uses natural ingredients to make truly decadent sweet confections. All the desserts are gluten-free, but for us lucky vegans, there are a few pastries that are 100% vegan as well.
Before you enter the bakery, you are greeted with a window full of fresh pastries. Once you’re hooked, you have to go in and immediately get hit with whatever Elisa is making that day. The walls are covered in hand painted colorful art that reflects the creativity of the bakery. There’s also bar seating with various books and magazines decorating the space.
The ingredients are mostly organic and locally-sourced. The gluten-free flour blends are made in-house using the best available grain and nut flours and sweetened with coconut palm sugar, dried fruits, maple syrup, and other naturally low-glycemic sweeteners. The quality and attention placed on these ingredients are reflected in the taste of Elisa’s pastries.
The first and most popular is the Black Heart Mocha Cake. This cake brings together healthy nutrients in a sinfully rich chocolate and coffee cake, topped with luscious salted chocolate ganache. It’s also small enough to eat after a big meal and not be too full.
For something less decadent, there’s the afternoon truffles, which are delicate hand-rolled apricot and pistachio truffles. There’s also the First Date Truffles, which are bold, rich hand-rolled date and coconut truffles.
Elisa also has the slow cooked apple butter and some sweet nuts, but I didn’t get to try those. However, based on what I’ve had at the bakery so far, I don’t think you can go wrong with anything in here.
What I especially love about Elisa’s Love Bites is how innovative Elisa is. Chef Elisa Lyew is a NYC pastry chef who decided to shake things up with healthy and delicious desserts after spending years honing her skills in several renowned restaurants. She often shakes things up on the menu too by introducing seasonal and special pastries. For Valentine’s Day 2017, there was the black heart bomb, which is a 4 inch truffle with chocolate cake and ganache inside placed inside a cute heart shape box!
In March 2017, Elisa created a custard. It’s a Naked Rose Custard, made with a base of rose water and cashew milk and is topped with crushed pistachios. The custard is fragrant, light, silky smooth, and pink!
